GWN Trip July 12th – 21st 2021

Quobba Station is 1000kms north, on the Indian Ocean, 70km north of Carnarvon. Its northern end runs along 80km of the southern end of Ningaloo Reef. We will take the long drive to snorkel there one day (it’s wonderful snorkeling in shallow water – wetsuits are good and floating things and snorkeling gear of course!) but the other days we will be camped near a reef and shell beach. No swimming but lovely shell beach and whale-watching as the humpbacks migrate north to breed. The reef is wonderful to walk on … reef shoes or thongs are good here … all sorts of things to see! We can walk 3km north to swim or 10km south to snorkel and swim and watch the blowholes (or catch the bus). We will also make a 60km trip to Red Bluff (also on Quobba station) for swimming, surfing, walking, snorkeling and a cute sea-view bush cafe. We will do walks along the coast each day but this will be less like a serious Great Walk and more like a Summer Camp. We can have fires and you can have a shower every day. It can be windy and it can rain in July (rarely, but it did last year) so be prepared! Fuller itinerary TBA.

The camping is just in the sand and a long way from the ablution block so nice and wild and not all touristy or anything. Great way to escape the rain in July!

If you want to go earlier you can, or stay longer, just take your own car. People with their own transport pay their own camping fees at the Quobba Homestead office ($17/night per adult or $9/night for 16 years and under. You can’t book ahead for camping, you just turn up, though mention you are with the GW.
We are also asking you to contribute $15 per day to the Great Walk.

We are looking to find a food coordinator or two, to plan and buy the food. Please come forward, we will help you with recipes and shopping lists.

Otherwise everyone brings a box of food valued at $50+,with veggies, fruit, rice, cheese etc. to share and the cooking will still be shared.

We are taking the GWN trailer with some cooking equipment, gazebo, and extras, but not the truck.

Robert and Kerrieanne will be driving the bus. It will be leaving Fremantle early on Monday July 12th, leaving from Vera’s place in Hilton, stopping overnight on the way, probably around Northampton. We will be due to come back on Wednesday, July 21st with a stopover on the return trip.

The cost will be $400 including bus, camping fees and Great Walk contribution. The camping fees include showers and toilets. Cheaper costs for children if needed. We will be taking a maximum of 15 on the bus as we need to bring the gear, food and firewood – help would be appreciated if anyone has room in their vehicles.

We need expressions of interest asap so we can secure this booking.

The overall organiser is Morgan Morris (ph 0457 4833 17)
Please contact Vera Ross ( ph 0401 4034 51) to register your interest/commitment to come.
